About the Farm

The one hundred and sixty acres of Swillington Organic Farm form part of the historic Swillington Park Estate.

The farm is home to all of our free range and organic animals, a diverse range of wildlife and varying members of our team.

The farm has a diverse range of habitats including woodland, marsh, pasture and ponds, providing a haven for wildlife and the perfect place for our organic rare breed pigs and native breed cattle and sheep as well as free range organic poultry. However these idyllic surroundings are only 5 miles from Leeds and easily accessible by car, bike, train and on foot.

Facilities on the farm include our farm shop from which we sell all our fresh and local produce, our butchery and poultry slaughterhouse, an organic dairy and a Victorian walled garden where we grow vegetables through a community supported agriculture scheme.

In addition all of our delicious produce can now be cooked on site due to our acquisition of a large catering trailer in summer 2010.

Swillington Organic Farm is also the location of other family-run enterprises including a Christmas Tree Farm and Swillington Park Fishing; a popular venue for anglers throughout the region.

We converted to organic farming in 2001 and have been fully certified as organic since then. Farming organically helps us to produce our produce in a more environmentally friendly way and we feel makes the quality of what we produce so much better as we keep it free of all the nasties such as pesticides and GM or cloned ingredients.

All our meat and eggs are also guaranteed free range as we value animal welfare and believe wholeheartedly that our animals should live happy outdoor lives.

We aim to farm in an environmentally responsible way and are proud to be part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme which helps promote and support a wide variety of wildlife on the farm. Species present include harvest mice, barn, little and tawny owls and a variety of ducks, waders, butterflies and insects.

Our commitment to environmentally friendly farming was recognised in 2010 when Jo was awarded in the Tye Trophy awards by the Yorkshire Agricultural society for the ways in which she has encouraged wildlife on the farm which include an ongoing programme of tree and hedge planting, coppicing and reed bed management in order to further improve the area for wildlife.

To reduce food miles and pollution all our meat, vegetables, eggs and dairy are produced on the farm or within Yorkshire and we use a local slaughterhouse coupled with our butchery and poultry slaughter facilities on the farm.
